"brief_description": "Cast iron with magnesium induced spheroidised graphite",
"long_description": "Cast iron is a brittle material and it is advantageous to process it in such a way to improve its ductility. The brittleness is partially due to the graphite flakes which act as nucleation sites for cracks. Therefore it is an advantage to have the graphite present as spheres. This can be achieved by a heat treatment regime or by the addition of a small amount of Mg which poisons the graphite growth directions. ",

"brief_description": "Al 75, Cu 25 (wt%), hypoeutectic alloy",
"long_description": "The micrograph shows primary Al dendrite arms (white). The dendrite trunk has been intersected at an angle by the plane of polishing to give the observed morphology. Between the dendrites is the Al - CuAl2 eutectic. Initially dendrites would have formed from the liquid, the regions between the dendrite arms known as the mushy zone transforming to a eutectic solid (L to Al + CuAl2). These two phases form cooperatively as neighbouring lamellae with the lateral diffusion of material across the growing interface. The relative amounts of the two phases (Al and CuAl2 ) within the eutectic are determined by applying the Lever Rule at the eutectic temperature.",

"brief_description": "Blackheart cast iron",
"long_description": "Blackheart cast iron is produced by heating white cast iron at 900-950 ºC for many days before cooling slowly. This results in a microstructure containing irregular though equiaxed nodules of graphite in a ferritic matrix. The term \"blackheart\" comes from the fact that the fracture surface has a grey or black appearance due to the presence of graphite at the surface. The purpose of the heat treatment is to increase the ductility of the cast iron.",

"brief_description": "Bi 60, Sn 40 (wt%)",
"long_description": "The composition is near eutectic, and the cooperative growth into fine lamellae can be clearly seen. It is also clear that in some areas the lamellae were growing out of the image(the curved lines and dots), while in other the lamellae were almost within the plane of the image(nearly parallel lines).",
